Next Project: Space Opera Trilogy

 Having just published The Sundered Circle, a fast-paced fantasy novel, I'm interested in trying something new. 

It's time to write my Space Opera Trilogy.

At least, I'm pretty sure it's a trilogy. It's been presenting itself in my head as an arc that follows three books, but ultimately, the universe that arc plays out in is vast enough that it could hold a hundred books.


Notes have been written, reference has been collected, and I've built a three dimensional model of the spaceship that the first book mainly takes place in. Sorry, no pictures of the ship: the ship is still a prototype, and the 3d model is built in Minecraft. Minecraft is a surprisingly useful tool for making locations in your writing worlds, especially the kind of locations that aren't represented well in two dimensions.

In a far future post we can take a tour, but not until at least the first book is published and I have fully explored the ship myself. 

The thing I think I am going to write is not always the thing that ends up coming out. I will say that this series will end up being much more of a soft Space Opera rather than Hard SF. It might end up even being more of a Space Fantasy: I always did like (original!) Star Wars more than Alien or The Expanse.

Small Good Things Are Better

When I'm trying to do something big... say... write a novel, it can be too big and I just don't do it. This is the case with an epic trilogy that I have been poking at for seven years. I've completed many other small projects since the seed of that epic space trilogy came to me, and if I tally up the word counts for all those other projects, it's very clear that I could have written that space trilogy. But... in the past I have tried to take it all on at once, at least mentally,  as a trilogy . Which, to say kindly and in an effort not to shame my past self, was a mild sort of insanity. :) You may have been in that kind of mild insanity too. If you did, I believe you had valid reasons for it, as I did.  But... valid reasons or not, it didn't get us the results we wanted. At least, it didn't work for me. To date my space trilogy is still not finished. I forget that it's okay to do small things. In fact, I think the only things I really can do are small things...

The Sundered Circle: Going Live Today

Today I slapped a book blurb out of my keyboard. It was actually pretty easy compared to some things I've written. Could be because I've had enough practice to make this kinda thing a little easier than it used to be, could be because I've been deep in this book for long enough to know what it's about (which actually isn't always the case for me), could be because the story is solid.  Here's the current version of the blurb.  "One more job in the rotting riverside city of Aventine, and then the independent mercenary Cyrus Bladetalker and his teleporting dog can retire young and rich.
